Typography Challenges and Awareness
This account reflects the considerable difficulties experienced with
typography in Cyrillic form. Why designing a visual method to meet my
learning needs, it revealed the necessity for a monospace font, marking
the beginning of my awareness for it. It also became clear that I needed
to exclusively stick with capital letters for Cyrillic.
Metaphor and Visual Representation
Turkic dyslexia feels like a «spaghetti pig's
breakfast... (with eggs!)». To address this, I created a calming
environment: a pitch-black scene featuring a serene flyover of a lake,
where Cyrillic typeforms floated gently, creating delightful reflections
on the water's surface. The rippling glimmer was soothing.
Introduction of Sarpa It also marked
the emergence of Sarpa, the hallucinogenic fish, also known as Sarpa
Salpa Sarlpa.
This type of fish is known for toxins that can induce visual distortions,
making it a fitting metaphor for Turkic dyslexia ...though this connection
is only made through the name. Sarpa's true identity is linked to a toxic
puffer fish I encountered in Kiama (NSW, Australia), but never managed to
catch. Sarpa appeared as a goldfish here, simply because it was an
existing 3D model in my archive. I needed a visually appealing fish that
wasn't edible. I didn't have the time to model a puffer fish, but used to
own a blackmore called «Google» who had
gigantic eyeballs that popped out, & a goldfish called
«Henry Orange Fish». Google (search
engine) didn't exist at the time of owning these fish, but as {sarpa
functioned similer to a search engine companion for me, that's why I was
fine to roll with the goldfish model.
Connection Through Water I'm not sure why the fish provides a
connection to the Turkic language through water, but it feels like an
immediate bridge, portal, or conduit. In the context of swimming, {sarpa
is like a pair of goggles that helps me see and also functions like a set
of scuba-diving lungs to sustain my inability to breathe underwater.
Phonetic Significance The name of
this fish, Sarpa (or Salpa),
carries a phonetic feature
♪(r=l,rl), identified as a critical
element in Turkic parsing. This note is recognised as having foundational
significance in the reception of Indigenous languages in Australia,
through the Turkic ear.
Sarpa as a
Companion Sarpa is my companion and language weaver, assisting
me with deep dives into the Turkic depths that remain largely submerged
(ocean). When I encounter linguistic amnesia and need to reach for Turkic
words, I also consult a >>>
fisherman who appears later in my journey. The
process of searching for words often feels like deep-sea fishing. I can't
see anything underwater, and if I had a sonar detector on my boat, it's
broken and out of order. Without that, I'm operating blind. All the Turkic
words I do know, become far gone and out of immediate reach.
Phonological Timing and Cognitive Processing
This piece examines phonological timing and the breakdown of cognitive
processes, using examples like;
«monospace issues» and «mono spacey shoes»
...to illustrate how the brain processes sound. It highlights the
difficulty in distinguishing between similar-sounding words when emphasis
is misplaced, as shown by the heavy stress on the beginning of the second
syllable in [issues]. The brain often
struggles to recognise when a word has ended, necessitating a deliberate
pause or gap that was not traditionally taught as a speaking skill. This
concept relates to what I later refer to as
«terminating letters»--| not necessarily actual letters, but markers
that indicate a pause, akin to musical rest symbols. This study focuses on
identifying and analysing situations where such pauses are needed as I
encounter them.
We also have prominent issue caused by the encoding
for
♪(y=i, iy).
Emotional Impact The piece is later
interrupted by an unsettling haykırı; a
piercing, wail-like sound that evokes the traumatic experience of my son's
kindergarten teacher insisting he write in lowercase. This harsh auditory
representation reflects the enduring pain and emotional impact of that
experience, which still lingers.
Dealing with dysgraphia felt like
my skin was being flayed.
